From the Depths

Exploring the creatures lurking behind the glass.

In From The Depths, I captured portraits of aquatic animals behind their glass enclosures. The juxtaposition of the animals’ natural forms with the dirty artificial environments surrounding them intrigued me. The condensation, debris, and scratches on the glass create layers between the camera and the subject that serve as natural filters and add character to the photographs. I also explored the lighting of the subjects and how the lack of context often makes the animals look larger than life. Inspired by Frederick Sommer’s roadkill images, I sought to find beauty in unlikely situations through my creation of From the Depths.
